Incontinence... yeah, we said it.

Incontinence.. there, I said it!

So let's talk about the unfortunate mishaps of being a vagina owner.

Did you know that 1 in every 4 women leak a little when they sneeze? I imagine that same statistic goes for when they cough or laugh really hard too!

So where did the negative stigma around women's products and hygiene happen?

Because there are SO many reasons for incontinence and yet we are made to feel like we need to hide it. As a new mom, I'm witnessing first hand how your body can change tremendously. Things that never crossed my mind, I now live in fear of happening to me. Which is probably why I'm always packing a spare pair. Right next to all of the other essentials. Tampon, panty liner, and lipstick!

But the reality is, everyone's reality is different. Every woman's body is different and can cause you to worry at any period of your life (no pun intended).

Here are some examples of the three most common LBL (Light Bladder Leakage) reasons:

Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI): The involuntary loss of urine that occurs when pressure is suddenly placed on your bladder. This could happen when you cough, laugh, sneeze, exercise or lift a heavy item.

Urge Urinary Incontinence (UUI): A sudden, intense urge to urinate, followed by a loss of urine. With this condition, the bladder muscles squeeze at the wrong time and cause leaks.

Mixed Urinary Incontinence (MUI): When you experience both Stress and Urge Urinary Incontinence, it's called Mixed Urinary Incontinence.

Causes and solutions for LBL

With that said, I thought I would share some solutions.

Of course, we think you should always keep your emergency pair on you, but there are also some exercises you can do to strengthen your pelvic floor.

A Kegel is an exercise that helps tighten pelvic floor muscles - the muscles used to stop urinating. Kegels are easy and can be done anytime, anywhere, without anyone even noticing!

  • Locate the pelvic muscles by pretending to stop the flow of urine
  • Squeeze and hold these muscles for three seconds, then relax for a count of three
  • Try to do 10 tightening/relaxing exercises for a set (aim for 3 sets per day)

If you've never experienced leakage of some kind, you're one of the lucky ones. But you have, know you are not alone and we'd love to hear your stories in our facebook group!
